Here is a sampling of some of my best work from the past year. This is by no means Everything, as a matter of fact it doesn't include ANY live concert shots. These are all shots that me and the person involved collaborated on to create. There is some nudity involved, as a matter of fact there's a nipple in the very first post. These shots are almost all done in controlled situations where I am controlling the light. There are a few here and there (maybe three) where it is all natural light but for the majority of them I am manipulating the light myself to achieve the desired effect. I hope you enjoy these images and the many more to come over the new year.
First shoot of the year in my house in Buffalo NY. Had been wanting to shoot someone in the shower for ages and finally did. Definitely going to do more like this.
Drove cross country to California from New York and met up with Aaron and my friend Dorian in LA. Did a quick little shoot with Darksiders while my friend Dorian was getting herself ready to shoot.
Dorian has been a good friend of mine for years now. We always try to get together and shoot when we end up in the same town. We had a super small window to work with this day but we got some great shots anyway!
Laia Gore is a fellow photographer, her and her boyfriend Nathaniel came to meet me in Sarasota before we went for dinner I had to get her to pose for some photos for me at sunset. I normally won't center my subject in my photo like this but it worked perfectly for this shot!
Had the pleasure of getting together with my friends Jill Justus and Matty Mullins in Indianapolis to do a fun portrait session in March while I was traveling from Florida to Minnesota with the tour I was on. Jill Justus is an amazing photographer in her own right. Definitely look her up and check out her work, she did the makeup on Matty here.
After getting together with my friends in Memphis May Fire in Indianapolis I headed up to Rockford IL and hung out with Garret for a few days before finishing my trip up to Minneapolis MN. We shot this in a local hair salon in Rockford on a day when they were closed for business. I used a photo of a burning print of Andy Biersack and Juliet Simms for the double exposure effect in this photo. I'm really happy with how it turned out.
When my tour got out to California I met up with my friends April and Alexis and we took a drive up to the desert to shoot at sunset. While April put on a big old ripped up wedding gown Alexis danced around in this red dress as the sun fell low in the sky on a beautiful April spring day...
My friend Alexis is actually in this photo as well. She is hiding under the train of the dress fluffing it up for the photo. (I guess you could call her a fluffer...) This is probably my favorite image of the year. There's something about it that's just magical.
One of my favorite things to photograph are nudes in nature, one of these days I want to get together with a model and travel up the coast in California and then hit a bunch of the national parks out west. I should finally get around to that this year.
A few days after my shoot with April and Alexis I drove back down to LA. I was supposed to shoot with all three of them at the beach but April couldn't make it due to medical reasons and Alexis got a last second modeling job in LA. It ended up being just me and Krystalyn, we got some badass shots anyway and an evening at the beach in California is a good evening no matter what.
Anyone who is familiar with my work has seen photos from my "MILK" series. I rarely get to do them outside of my home in Buffalo NY. I rented a studio in LA shortly before Warped Tour started this year and did a set with Alexis. My good friend Alex came down to the studio and did the pouring for me. For those that don't know where my inspiration for this photo series came from there was a photographer named Irving Penn who used to shoot for Vogue that did a piece called "cult creams" for them. It's a totally different aesthetic but was the inspiration for this series.
The day before Warped Tour began I got my friend Micky Knox to come through. She's one of the most badass women I know. I set my flag up in the parking lot in front of the trucks and we had ourselves a little photo shoot. This was my first shoot with my new Canon 6D and I was using the lensbaby composer 35mm lens. It definitely has an interesting effect but I'm not sure I'll use it too much.
I wasn't going to include any photos from Warped in this as my criteria was only photos from organized shoots where me and a person or persons got together just to shoot and I lit the shot myself. I lit this myself but it was super impromptu after Keith's set but the emotion and warmth of this one is so compelling that I made an exception.
Kristen had asked me to shoot her in her bikini way earlier on Warped tour and there weren't many more days left to get it done. We got together in Bonner Springs as the last bands were playing for the day and shot. We got some guys from some of the bands on tour to put holes in the caps of a few water bottles and spray water at her for this shot, was definitely a fun shoot, and kudos to Kristen for coming out in that skimpy bikini to shoot in the bandwagon/bus area. That had to take a lot of self confidence!
Brittany Andersen isn't your typical "model" type and that's one of the things I love about her. It's nice to shoot someone that doesn't fit your typical "model" mold. We got together shortly after Warped when I had a two day stay at home and met up on the waterfront in Buffalo to shoot at sunset before heading to my house to do a "MILK" photo set.
My second "MILK" shoot of the year... It took forever to set up another one... Brittany brought her friend Emily along and I got some shots with her as well. She's another "not your typical model" type. (Which made me very happy.)
Emily was a total doll. We did some shots of her and Brittany together too but I figured I would include one of each of them individually. It was so refreshing to shoot with her and Brittany and we will probably be working together again real soon!
I Spent all of September on tour with a band called Umphrey's McGee when that wrapped up I did a one off "show" in Toronto for a "League of Legends" video game tournament. When that was done I had a few days in the Detroit area and got together at the recording studio to hang out with my friend Craig Owens and shoot a few photos. I used my lensbaby lens again. I'm at odds with myself over whether that was the right choice or not but I love this photo anyway.
I started touring with a Broadway production of Cinderella in October, the second city we visited was Madison WI. Me and Domino had tried to get together the year before when I was in town with another show but our plans fell through. This year when I came to town with Cinderella we were able to make it happen. It being so close to Halloween we decided to do some shots with fake blood. I put the fake blood in a spray bottle and spritzed it all over her body. The first "bloody" shots we did she was wearing a tank top then we did a few nude photos. I like the way it ended up spattered on her face and not on her chest because of it.
We had just finished Shooting Fay with some over sized vampire teeth that made her look more Werewolf like. I had her take a quick walk back and forth on this little path in this park. She didn't really want to she was cold and raining. I'm not 100% haopy with the shot, I know we could have done better but I feel like we still did good enough to include the photo here. Fay is an amazing makeup and sfx artist you can find her on instagram as @cagedinpurgatory give her a follow!
I had a few weeks where I had nothing going on photography wise then I picked up one of my best friends Bataia on my way to Indianapolis. We got to do a couple photo shoots that week and I shot my last two concerts of the year. Bataia works at a haunted house every halloween and has a knack for special effects makeup. When we got to Lindsay's house she decided to do a big wound on her neck, once she finished it I shot a bunch of photos of just Lindsay then the two of them together. Bataia has a special place she goes when you get her involved with some special effects makeup and it's truly a sight to behold. One of my most fun photo shoots ever.
On the second to Last day we were in Indy me and Bataia got a hotel room to shoot in. She thought I was crazy having her shoot with pizza and liquor but we ended up getting some pretty rad shots out of it. It was casual and fun which is all I could really ask for.
We shot a few more things around the hotel room and finished with photos in the shower. This edit is "dirty" as in I added scratches grain and focus effects after the fact. Bataia does such a good job modeling. I really hope she pursues it more this year she is one of the most talented models I know and has a really great look.
After I dropped Bataia off in West Virginia I went home for Thanksgiving. While I was home I got together with De and her husband Corey to shoot photos. The very first "MILK" shoot I ever did was with De in the basement at her house. We have turned it into a yearly tradition at this point. De always complains and says it's the last time, then we end up doing it again the next year haha. I look forward to it every year, the two of them are truly two of my favorite people in the world.
A little after Thanksgiving I found myself in Austin Texas with Cinderella. My friend Dorian happened to be in Texas at the time so we decided to get together to shoot some photos. I got a room at Hotel Casulo in Austin, they have some really interesting room layouts. The bedroom in this room has a window between it and the bathroom. Dorian is standing in a really big Jacuzzi for this shot. By this time we had put so much soap in it to make bubbles that I'm surprised she was even able to stand up. I liked shooting from the bedroom into the bathroom like this, it gives the photos a surreal feeling like you're not seeing a photo that was taken but almost like it's a photo of a television screen that she is trying to come through.
I had the pleasure of getting together with Ashley Whitmer and Miranda Eliot in Florida a few weeks ago. We wandered around and took photos of one another. This was with my Lensbaby lens, that's why the edges of the frame have the crazy bokeh effect that they do. Miranda is one of my favorite photographers, you should definitely check out her work. Any time I'm questioning a photo she's one of the first people I go to to ask for help. (I didn't question her about this one and she hasn't seen it and she will probably hate it...)
This ended up being my final shoot of 2016. Bryan just dropped an ep, you can search him under B. Lay. I met Bryan years ago on Warped tour when he was performing with Falling In Reverse. I thought Bryan was Ronnie's bodyguard for the longest time. (someone had told me he was...) I later found out he was a musician in his own right, it's been really great to have made such a good friend on Warped and to watch him grow as an artist over the years. This is for sure one of my personal top ten photos of all time. I don't feel like it quite fits with what Bryan is currently going for but for me it's special.
